Aesthetic Beauty
Client: Cole Hair Studio
Location: Mosman, Sydney
Photography: Timothy Kaye
Cole Hair Mosman is the brand’s second Sydney address, commissioned following the runaway success of Cole Hair Double Bay. Nickolas Gurtler Office was asked to adapt the visual language developed for the flagship to a dramatically smaller footprint on Military Road—preserving the brand’s sleek, sexy minimalism while giving Mosman its own decisive character.
With only 34m² to work with, every millimetre was made to count. The reception counter becomes the project’s signature move: a sculptural piece inspired by architectural forms and avant-garde hair styling that also integrates the retail display. Angled grooves set products on an upward tilt, inviting clients to pick them up post-appointment—an intentional gesture that lifts engagement and increases dollars per transaction. It’s a clear example of how commercial thinking and design can operate as one.
Materially, the palette tightens and intensifies. Jurassic marble gives way to bold Grand Antique, its graphic veining anchoring the colour station, while American walnut cabinetry brings warmth and gravity. Precision-milled aluminium pulls by Studio Henry Wilson echo the brand’s attention to detail at the chair, translating craft into hardware. Mixed metals and sharpened geometry compress the flagship’s attitude into a compact plan without losing presence.
The client journey is clear and intuitive, tuned to the pace of a busy floor: consultation flows to colour, cut and finish without congestion. Storage is built in and concealed to keep the visual field composed; operational zones are arranged so staff and clients move naturally through the room. Lighting is mapped for both performance and mood—accurate at the chair and colour, refined at reception—so the space reads polished from first appointment to last.
Cole has quickly become a go-to for Sydney’s glossy set, where atmosphere equals artistry. Mosman advances that reputation with a smaller, smarter salon: new postcode, same attitude. Distinct yet clearly of the family, it demonstrates how a strong brand thread can be reinterpreted for scale—delivering a bold, seductive environment that works hard for the business and feels unforgettable to the client.
